Dear President Obama- I was moved on January 28th when you spoke about the situation in Egypt. You advised the protesters to remain peaceful while stating to the Egyptian government that “So I want to be very clear in calling upon the Egyptian authorities to refrain from any violence against peaceful protesters.” It was the stance I would expect from the man for whom I voted. It is with these thoughts in mind that I have watched recent events unfold. From New York to Portland, Seattle to Denver, I have watched in horror as peaceful protesters have been attacked by the very people who ought to be protecting their rights. I have seen an 87 year old woman get pepper sprayed, and a veteran get shot by a “non-lethal” projectile. Just 70 miles from where I live, I have watched peaceful protesters rounded up and tear gassed while their belongings were destroyed. But the most horrifying part is that you, Mr. President, have remained silent and allowed these travesties to occur. Sir in that speech in Janaury you said “The people of Egypt have rights that are universal. That includes the right to peaceful assembly and association, the right to free speech, and the ability to determine their own destiny. These are human rights. And the United States will stand up for them everywhere.” Does our own country not count as everywhere? Why are hate groups such as the Westboro Baptist Church or the Ku Klux Klan provided protection under the 1st amendment but those who are peacefully protesting not?
Mr. President, I am not foolish enough to believe that you actually read all of the emails and correspondence you receive. I imagine a junior member of the White House staff will read through this, send the stock response and hit delete. On the off chance that you do see this sir, I still have hope that there will be change and I still believe that you are the man to create the change, I just wish you stood as strongly against those who oppose universal rights within your own country as you have stood against those in other countries.
Sincerely,
